Mausam, an out and out love story, has Shahid playing a fighter pilot named Harinder Singh (Harry) in the Air Force. Air Force is an important part of the script. Pankaj Kapoor took special permission from the Air Force to make sure the forces are represented correctly in the film.

Sonam Kapoor plays a Kashmiri girl named Aayat, and Supriya Pathak her aunt. Aditi Sharma also plays Shahid's love interest in the first half of the film but Shahid's love gravitates towards Sonam Kapoor eventually. The film spans over 10 years, covering part of the 1990s. Shahid will be seen in four different looks.

"I am trying to learn flying fighter planes. I am playing the role of an air force officer in my father's film, so there will be certain amount of exposure that I am trying to gain. But there are lots of permission that need to be taken and I also need to start shooting in three weeks ... but yes I am trying to go to some of the air bases and if that is possible and authorities really allow me, then I would really love to go for that because it would really help me understand my character," he said.

There have also been reports that he plays a depressed man. Mid Day reports that Shahid has stopped his daily workouts in order to get the right look.
