I'm Enjoying The Period - Sonam
9 Apr 2011 | 1728 Views | admin

Despite a sting a flops that would have given any other actor's self-worth a real pounding, Sonam takes the box-office status of 'Saawariya', 'Dilli 6', 'Aisha' or 'I Hate Luv Storys' in her stride as she awaits the release of 'Thank You'.

Four years worth of flops must be difficult to handle? "I am of the opinion that when you are between the ages of 18-25 your life undergoes the biggest amount of change in that period. And the best part about that is that you are too young at that time, that one is not scared about the changes that take place. But as we get older we are afraid of and resistant to change. I am enjoying this period. People recognise me today and it is this recognition that I have worked very hard for all these years."

Surely, being Anil Kapoor's daughter must help! After all, Anil Kapoor and the director of her upcoming 'Thank You' Anees Bazmee are fast friends too. "Yes, they are. They know each other for around three decades and even before I was born. I know him as a child. But then I cannot take things for granted at all. Everyone has his own status as well. My father does not allow me to take anything lightly in life. He has taught me that when there is around Rs40-50 crore riding on you, a lot of people depend on you for their bread and butter and you need to work with a lot of dedication. I have been following the values my father has taught me."

She adds, "It is true that if I were not Anil Kapoor’s daughter I would not have gotten so much attention. But this does not mean I have not worked very hard to reach where I am today. I have assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali Sir for three years and worked very hard even then. I was selected for my roles after having auditioned with 300 other girls. After 'Saawariya', I had to lose weight for my next audition and was selected to play the lead in Rakeysh Mehra’s 'Dilli 6'. Neither my parents nor me had even dreamt or wanted that I become an actor some day, but somehow it has happened."

What does it feel like working with people who were her father's co-stars? "When I was a kid and used to go to the sets of my father’s films, I have seen actors like Suniel Shetty and Irrfan Khan there. And now I am working with them. The best part about this is that I get properly taken care of on the sets because of that."

From the artistic sensibillities of 'Saawariya' to an all out commercial film like 'Thank You' - how do roles differ? "I play the role of a simple yet modern girl called Sanjana who, under the influence of her female friends, starts doubting the character of her husband."

Isn't that similar to 'No Entry'? "The film is not similar to 'No Entry', but yes, there is a certain similarity when it comes to subject. But the treatment is very different. We do have a few stories here in our film industry. We change the angle around a few times."

Would she tolerate cheating in real life? "I will kill my husband! I believe that every relationship needs to be honest in itself. Be it friends, husband and wife, parents or a boyfriend and a girlfriend, honesty and love are the two most important things there. The beginning and the ending of relationships only depend on how honest you are with the other person."

Sonam seems have a thing for older men in her films. "Yes, my co-stars have all been older but I do not have any issues about it. Bobby Deol is my hero in this film and he is around 12 years older than me. Ranbir who worked with me in 'Saawariya' is five years older than me, Imran Khan who did 'I Hate Luv Storys' with me is four years older to me and is the closest to me in terms of age, Abhishek Bachchan who did 'Dilli 6' with me is 11 years older than me and Abhay Deol is also 12 years older than me. The thing is that I look much younger than my age and that increases the onscreen age difference a lot. But then, I really do not care about these things. I let my heart do the thinking and talking."

Not so very far from being a debutante herself, Sonam will now make way for the next gen Kapoor - her younger brother. Is she mentoring him? "Arjun bhaiyya (Boney Kapoor’s son) is also coming into films and so is my younger brother Harsh. But our relationship is the same like any other brother and sister and he surely does not want to take any tips from me as he makes his debut as an actor soon."

The four years have also helped Sonam cement and mend her turbulent relationships in Bollywood. We hope the sparring with Abhay Deol has ended in a truce, if not in peace? Cease fire has been called apparently, at least from Sonam's end. "I myself am very tired of the deadlock with Abhay. I do not want to fight further or anything with him. I have stopped everything from my end and do not want to take the issue further," she says. And once-nemesis Deepika? "Well, we spoke a lot only on Karan’s (Johar) show. We are not at all in touch after that and haven’t spoken to each other after that."

Would she have changed her last four years for different films or different relationships? "I do not have any complaints in life and do not regret anything that I have done at all. Everything is going good. My parents have a great equation among themselves and they have a good rapport with us too. What else do I need?" Indeed!
