With a last name so powerful and oodles of talent as part of her lineage, what else could Sonam Kapoor ask for. Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam started her career with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’. Her latest flick- ‘Aisha’, is all about high society, marriage and fashion. In an exclusive interview with India Journal, she reveals about herself, her family and her aspirations:
Q. You have seen fame and money since childhood. Did you always want to be an actor? A: I have had a very normal childhood. I went to Arya Vidya Mandir and even bought my first car with my own money...we had a Maruti 800 for many years and then later, we graduated to an Esteem.
I started wearing designer stuff only after I started earning my own money...
We lived like everyone else does, we felt hurt and had desires.
Becoming an actor was not on my agenda, but it was pure fate that I did.
Q. You started as an assistant under Sanjay Leela Bhansali. How did that happen? A: I was taking a year off before studying in UK and I decided to assist Sanjay Leela Bhansali while he was making ‘Black’...and i learned how to use your body and your face as a tool to create art, and then before I knew it, I was in ‘Saawariya’...
Q: So what about ‘Aisha’ caught your attention? A: Well, to begin with Jane Austen is my favorite author and it is based on ‘Emma’...
It is based on subjects that are relevant even today. The matchmaking, girls looking to settle down and how the high societies in Delhi are...
Its a romantic and a funny love story that cuts across time....even though its set in the Victorian times...it highlights the societal pressure of arranged marriages even today in the different strata of society. But make sure you read ‘Emma’ before you see the movie.
Q: How was it working with your dad, Anil Kapoor and Rhea for the first time? Did you have any sister squabbling? A: No. My sister and I are opposites bur we really complement each other ...she is very pragmatic and practical and I’m quite impulsive and sensitive, there is always give and take, she thinks with her head and I basically go with my gut, either we go with her ideas or we go with my ideas It depends on the situation but we have a good partnership and my dad was hardly there on the sets, he came there like a couple of times, my sister basically ran the show...
It was her first time too, so you supported her through things as well? Well...I certainly hope so..
On June 16 2009, we had a chance to chat with Sonam in the forums. She chatted for a while and answered some questions. Due to time limitation, she couldn't respond to all the questions but she replied to them later and sent us the answers Read more...
