Sonam Kapoor on the A to Z of Aisha
29 Jul 2010 | 523 Views | Mina

From being draped in chiffon to being adorned in Chanel, Sonam Kapoor definitely has it going on!

Fresh off playing the picture perfect Dharma Productions heroine in Punit Malhotra’s I Hate Luv Storys, Sonam has effortlessly stepped into a brand spanking new pair of heels for her upcoming chic chick-flick, Aisha.

From loving love stories to match-making her way to love, Filmicafe.com exclusively chatted with the actress on the A to Z of Aisha.

Q) A little over a week left to Aisha’s release. How are you feeling? Have the butterflies come calling yet?
Sonam:
Oh yes they have! This is a first time I’m getting butterflies for a film.

I’ve done four films till now, this being my fourth one and I’m usually so chilled out and calm. But with Aisha as the days have neared, I’ve been losing sleep.

I’m actually nervous because its my sister Rhea's first film and it’s me in the title role playing the main protagonist, which is a huge responsibility. We’ve all
worked really hard on the film.

Q) Jane Austen said of Emma, “I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like,” What was it that you liked about the character so much so that you had to become the Indianized Emma – Aisha?
Sonam:
I like all Jane Austen heroines! They are either from an unprivileged background or are the ‘goody-goody’ life all sorted out type.

For Aisha, who is unlike any other Hindi film heroine or Jane Austen heroine for that matter, it’s about an inner conflict. It’s a coming of age story about a girl who wants to become a woman and growing up is a painful thing. At the very same time it’s exciting, exhilarating and full of happiness; eventually you find yourself and your footing. And for Aisha, after all the growing pains, she finally becomes a woman.

There were so many layers and shades to her character. It was about her evolution and growth as a person which I loved. The inherent internal conflict was a great challenge for me as an actor.

Q) Aisha’s character is grey with a lot of fashionable flair. How was it to play dress-up and what does Aisha’s fashion sense say about her?
Sonam:
It was the most fun experience because I love clothes and I love fashion!

Each character is dressed according to who they are. For instance - Aisha is really girly, really classic, really pretty and loves accessorizing; Pinky Bose is really over the top and loves ramp pieces; Shefali is like a behenji with ordinary taste in fashion. Aisha tries to fix her unfashionable ways and the behenji becomes the hot girl!

Q) The set must have been quite the girl power scene with you, Rhea, Rajshree, Devika, Ira, Lisa and Amrita. So who was being bullied and who was doing the bulling?
Sonam:
We all got along pretty well. I honestly feel girls do less politics than boys. It was full chick scene happening on the sets, we were all really supportive of each other. Moreover we’re all like feminists who believe that girls are the best!

Q) Tell us about the ‘Punju connection’ you and Abhay share and what according to you makes you click as a pairing?
Sonam:
Besides the Punju connection, there’s also a Juhu connection and a filmi-family connection; we have lots of connections! (Laughs)

He keeps telling me, “I can see myself in you. You’re exactly the way I was when I was younger.” We are very similar people according to Abhay, I don’t see it because I think Abhay’s grown-up and I haven’t grown-up as of yet.

We do have very similar acting styles so there’s a great connect there.

Q) In the film, Aisha is smitten by the quintessential player and bad-boy Dhruv, what is about baddies that attracts the good girls?
Sonam:
Maybe it’s because we girls are such control freaks, we think that we can change everything! (Laughs)

If things are meant to happen, then they happen. The eternal optimist I am, I believe if someone really loves you he/she has the potential to change.

Q) We’ve heard the ‘Rishikesh tales’ about the experience of filming there. How about Delhi, any memorable moments that come to mind from shooting in the capital city?
Sonam:
I remember we were eating a lot! We went shopping to Emporio and Janpath. The food in Delhi is outstanding, the shopping is outstanding. It’s called the fashion capital of India for a reason!

Q) In Gal Mitthi Mitthi, all dressed up in Indian wear you break into a dance with a bit Bhangra and Indian classical tossed together. How was it shooting that song?
Sonam: We had an absolute blast shooting it. It was too much fun!

It was the last day of the schedule, we switched on the music and let loose. We were told to just go ahead do our thing and have a good time, and that’s what we did - we had a great time!

Q) When it comes to India and Indians getting marriage is a matter of life and death, finding the perfect match and tying the knot dominate conversations. How would you rate Aisha’s match-making skills on a scale of 10?
Sonam: Well, just like Emma there are a lot of hits and misses for Aisha but her heart is in the right place, so I’d give her a 10-on-10!

Q) So what’s in-store for Aishaholics and to be holics when they go and watch the film on Aug 6?
Sonam: They’re going to have a good ol’ good time watching a real story with interesting characters.

It’s a really smart, fun film.
