In Dubai, the star talked romance, movies, and fashion with Masala.com

Sonam Kapoor, looking drop-dead-gorgeous in a shimmery knee-length dress, says she’s starving because she skipped lunch. Is skipping lunch the secret to her svelte figure then? No, nothing of the sort. Sonam tells us that she had a massive breakfast (“Eggs, cheese, broccoli, it was one of those huge platters”) which led to the lunch miss. And now, to make up for that, she’s ordering coffee and cookies and chocolate! And since she is in Dubai, shopping is obviously on the agenda. “How much time will it take to get to Villa Moda?” she asks us, after revealing that Mall of the Emirates is always on her ‘must-visit list’ in the city.

So she loves her chocolate and her shopping like any regular girl, but what’s surprising about Sonam is her choice of fave love stories. When she starts reeling off the names, we notice that not one of them has a happy ending. “Oh my God, you’re right! They all end tragically,” she admits. How much do you identify with Simran, the character you play in ‘I Hate Luv Storys’?

Well, in some ways we are very alike and in some ways not at all. I am an idealist and a romantic like her. But not a control freak or a perfectionist. I’m quite open-minded. In fact, I don’t like perfect things! I like things to be a bit off and odd. That’s just how I am.

What was it like making this movie? What’s Imran like as a co-star?
He’s very chilled out, very humble and very respectful. When he’s not playing retarded pranks that is! He and the director Punit (Malhotra) were forever coming up with new ways to trouble me. That’s what happened behind the scenes. I didn’t play any pranks on them but I would be very critical. I made them feel like badly behaved and badly dressed boys!

Tell us about your favourite real-life love story and your fave movie love story.

Real-life would have to be my mum and dad (Anil and Sunita Kapoor). From the movies, ‘Gone With The Wind’, ‘Wuthering Heights’, and ‘Mughal-E-Azam’. Wait a minute, none of them end very romantically, do they? What movie love story do I like that has a happy ending? There has to be something! (Thinks for a while) I’ve got it! ‘My Fair Lady’!

Who do you think was the most romantic on-screen Bollywood couple?

Madhuri Dixit and my dad! They had such amazing, sizzling chemistry! I loved them in ‘Tezaab’, ‘Beta’ and ‘Ram Lakhan’.

What’re the fashion trends you love and hate?

I love fashion and I think it’s all about being an individual. When you’re comfortable, you’re confident. Fashion trends I hate? Wedges and clogs – I think they’re disgusting!

What’s the last movie you saw that you loved?

‘Avatar’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’. They were both amazing. I thought ‘Avatar’ didn’t get enough credit actually.

What’s the last movie you saw that you hated?

I don’t see bad films! I get warned by the critics!
