Sonam Kapoor’s a romantic, quite like her character in I Hate Luv Storys - but the actress claims that mostly ‘Mister Right’ has to be able to keep her from getting bored

What about Simran, your character from I Hate Luv Storys, first snagged your attention?


Usually I’m given very spunky roles to play. But this girl has a very idealistic view about romance and love. Imran’s character always has this confused expression on his face whenever she talks to him about them. But when he enters her life he shakes up her theory of what’s perfect for her. She realises she has more fun that way not trying too hard to be perfect.

Everyone’s been raving about your on screen chemistry with Imran Khan – was it something you expected?


I was looking forward Imran – he’s extremely humble and that’s very refreshing. I’ve never met anybody who actually asks for criticism. We have an instant connection and that’s probably what people see on screen.

Were you apprehensive at all about working with Punit Malhotra, a first-time director?


Not at all. Punit has got ten years of work experience behind the camera and he’s always been referred to as ‘Dr. Fix It’. He has a reputation for saving movies with his work. He knew exactly what he wanted from the start. It’s easy to give yourself up to someone like that.

Speaking of the filmmaker, every movie you do brings a fresh romantic link-up; how do you deal with the rumours?


I take it with a pinch of salt. I can’t stop people from talking or writing about them. But I am grateful that they want to write about me. But, touchwood, I don’t have that many negative things written about me. If people are spreading lies about me, that’s their karma.

I deal with it by keeping my personal life personal. Talking about it is tacky, almost like talking about how much I earn. That’s how I’ve been brought up. It’s nobody’s business. And washing my laundry in public just doesn’t paint a pretty picture.

Your character in the film is a die-hard romantic; what about you?


Of course I believe in love; I’m a girl and like most my age I believe that there is someone out there for me. There has to be someone meant just for me.

So what’s the image in your head when you think about that perfect someone?


I think he has to be really, really smart. I don’t like dumb blonde types. I have a very short attention span – I get really bored. And I don’t want someone who has a very narrow vision. I want someone who can speak about the world at large and travel.

What’s next after I Hate Luv Storys?


My film Aisha, which is based on Jane Austen’s Emma, is going to release in August. I think it is one of the most fulfilling roles of my career. Then there’s Thank You directed by Anees Bazmee with Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol. And lastly, there’s Mausam with Shahid Kapoor.

Did you enjoy the experience of working with family?


Absolutely. But you know they always treated me as an actor. I was there for the shooting phase and then during the pre-prod and post-prod they didn’t want me around except when working on the script and costumes.

What, according to you, clicks at the box office?


Any movie that I sign, I make sure I do something different every time. I’ve always made sure each character is completely different from the last. I never want to get typecast. The audience enjoy change and don’t have that much tolerence.
