Ash is not Aunty: Sonam
18 Jan 2010 | 528 Views | Mina

You and your dad seem to be a unique brand together, in the sense that you’re perhaps the only father-daughter pair to be doing endorsements together, and for brands that are very high-end and niche. Why do you think you both work well together that way?
I guess it’s because my father’s never treated me like a daughter. Also, I think, because he’s an actor and I followed in his footsteps and became an actor. Because of that, I have a relationship with my father that’s more than that of a father and daughter - it’s a relationship between two professionals. Plus, I think it’s because the brands are looking at something to do with heritage and passing down and what happens over the years - they’re all luxury brands that you can pass down to your kids. It has to do with quality, heritage, something that’s really high-end and rare to find.

You’ve come to be recognised as a fashion icon even by fashion-watchers outside the film industry. How deep is your interest in fashion as a field?

I enjoy fashion, I love it. But it’s not like I think about it... I’m like a little girl who loves dressing up. I don’t adhere to Bollywood stereotypes, I guess, I don’t know...

Who do you think you’ve got your sense of style from?
My mother and my sis - they both love clothes.

Is there a story that you think would make for a great movie subject, if you were to make a film?

The Taming Of The Shrew, actually.

Are you into reading?
I’m very into reading and literature. It’s a better pastime than doing other nefarious activities!

Before you become an actor, what did you think you were going to be?
Probably a writer. I’d write films. I’m a loner and I like to do my own thing most of the time - I like to sit at my desk and write.

There were reports that you’d called Aishwarya ‘aunty’ after the L’Oreal controversy...

It’s all hearsay - I never said any of that. I don’t want to comment on it anymore. A lot has been written and said and it’s all become very messy and dirty, and I don’t want to get into it anymore. I really respect Abhishek as a person and had one of my best experiences working in Delhi 6. Aishwarya Rai is Aishwarya Rai - I never said that. I would address her in a respectful manner, but I’d never call her aunty.
