Sonam Kapoor on everything that dazzles and that includes her
Sonam Kapoor glows. Be it in traditional kundan or more contemporary designs; the jewellery she wears only adds to her classic good looks. t2 quizzed the diva-in-the-making, the brand ambassador for Anant (a range of single-line diamond jewellery by Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council) on her kind of jewellery, her dad and Abhay Deol
Why did you sign on with Anant?
First of all, Anant is diamonds, solitaires, the most enduring of all substances. It is really hard and it's got quality and it is about celebration. And diamonds... it is a quality investment.... It is everything that I would want my life to stand for. It is also for the Gem & Jewellery (Export Promotion) Council... and to promote the diamond industry in our country. That's why I decided to do it. It signifies what a woman actually is. The line itself, Anant... I think it is an apt choice for me to go for a brand like that.
Are you a jewellery person?
I love jewellery! I love accessories. I love anything to do with dressing up and fashion.
What kind of jewellery is your favourite?
Of course, I love solitaires. Which girl doesn’t like solitaires and diamonds? They are my favourite. Diamonds are always a girl's best friend. -------------------------------------------------- STYLE FILE
Dominant pieces in your jewellery casket
Necklaces.
The overused item
My solitaire earrings.
The never-used item
The most outrageous ring that I picked up which was ridiculous. I don't know why I picked it up! I thought it was very cool at that point, but it is not.
--------------------------------------------------
Most stylish Bollywood actor
Amitabh Bachchan. I like the way he dresses.
Most stylish Bollywood actress I think Karisma Kapoor dresses well (pause)... and Twinkle Khanna.
Your style inspiration
Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy obviously, and Marilyn Monroe.
And what do you think suits you best? I think normal solitaire earrings. Earrings actually suit the best. I feel a woman should always expose her collarbones. Neck and collarbones are the most beautiful parts of a woman's body, according to me. A single-line necklace or a diamond necklace just looks stunning. It accentuates that part of the body. (You can accentuate) whichever part of the body you feel needs to be accentuated. If you have beautiful hands, then wear diamond bracelets or bangles. If you have a beautiful face, wear earrings. If you have beautiful fingers, then you wear rings. If you have a beautiful neck and collarbones, wear necklaces.
Where do you like to shop for your jewellery?
My mom designs beautiful jewellery. Otherwise I get diamond jewellery made and stuff like that. The Gem & Jewellery Council has 6,000 jewellers under them. So any of the jewellers would do (laughs).
As a child, what's that one piece from your mother's jewellery box that you used to love?
I think it's my mom's gutta pusal (a heavy, traditional neckpiece) that I wanted! It is beautiful. It reminds me of a Raja Ravi Varma painting.
And do you have it now?
No I don't, but I have worn it a couple of times.
What’s the quirkiest piece of jewellery that you possess?
I have a beautiful headpiece. It is very reminiscent of the Seventies. It's by House of Harlow, which is designed by Nicole Richie. It is beautiful.
What's been your most precious jewellery buy till date?
A pair of solitaire earrings.
Do you remember the first piece of jewellery that you picked up?
On my own? I think it would have to be this beautiful Tiffany silver necklace for myself. I thought it was gorgeous!
And what's the one piece that you would like to have in your box?
I think it would be a single-line solitaire necklace, for sure! I think every woman wants that.
How is Aisha coming along?
I am actually shooting for Aisha right now. I have 25 days left for production and then post-production will start. The release will most probably be between April and June.
Have you read Emma?
Of course, I have (laughs)! Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this film.
The best thing about the film is...
The characters have layers. It is not completely white like our Hindi film heroines. It is a very good story.... And also the fact that there are so many women on the set. I like that about a movie. I like women (laughs).
What's your equation with your Aisha co-star Abhay Deol?
He is a brilliant actor! It is nice working with actors who know how to give and take. Abhay Deol is a giving actor. He is not selfish. It is very easy to work with someone like him.
What are your releases this year?
I Hate Luv Stories, produced by Dharma and directed by Punit Malhotra. It stars Imran Khan.
You;ve shot a commercial with your dad. Is a film around the corner?
No, I am not acting in any film with him.
If you were a director, which film would you like to remake and cast your father in?
It is a very difficult question, actually. I would really, really like to make Charlie Chaplin’s life with him. I think my dad would be really good in that role!
