Sonam's solo Interview with Aaj Tak (pre-Saawariya's release)

Humaare saath hai filhaal Sonam. Yeh hai mushoor abhinehta Anil Kapoor ki beti aur sabse badi baat hai ke inki aane wali film hai 'Saawariya' jiske baare mein kahaa jaa raha hai ke kaafi jhakaas film hai.

(Sonam laughs.)

Sonam, swaagat hai aapka.

SONAM: Thank you. Namaste!

Maine theek kaha ke kaafi jhakaas film hai?

SONAM: Jhakaas toh bilkul hai

Zara si baat hai, filmo mein jo aapka career tha...

SONAM: Hmm?

Sanjay ko assist kiya tha...

SONAM: Haanji

Camera ke peeche aur ab camera ke saamne...

SONAM: Difference kya hai?

Bilkul...

SONAM: Umm...

Aur kyun choose kiya aapne?

SONAM: Maine choose kiya, maine toh sirf creative field mein part lena tha... Kuch bhi... Whether it was writing, painting, acting, directing... Anything to do with the creative side of filmmaking! Toh maine kahaa ki acha ab mujhe sir ke saath assist karna hai kyunki he's a very good filmmaker, he's the best filmmaker in our country... aur Devdas jo thi, jo maine matlab hazaar baar dekhi hogi...

Hazaar baar?

SONAM: Haan, bilkul!

Toh yeh to shayad Guiness book mein bhi jaa sakta hai

SONAM: I...bilkul... thoda toh... I think there are a lot of fans who...

Main unko approach karunga

SONAM: Haan! (laughs) but because it was aesthetically so beautiful... Itni khubsurat picture thi... Aishwarya Rai itni khubsurat lag rahi thi, Shah Rukh Khan itne handsome... aur itna... har ek jan ne itni badiya performance di thi is film mein ki maine kahaa ki art direction-wise? BRILLIANT! editing-wise, BRILLIANT! Filmmaking-wise, brilliant! Writing-wise? Brilliant! I said 'yeh filmmaker aam aadmi nahin hai, he's a God'... Itni badi picture unhone banaayi aur itni khubsurati se banaayi... I think a lot of people have not understand the nuances behind it, underneath it... I was too floored, I was like I have to work with this man... Kuch tha, back of my mind mein... ki is aadmi ke saath mujhe milna hai aur unke saath kaam karna hai! Kuch toh... main chu bhi loon na toh mere liye bohat hoga! (laughs) So yea...eventually maine kahaa assist karloon aur assist kiya maine unko behind the camera... Behind the camera, you dont have to worry about your looks, you dont have to worry about your hair, you dont have to worry about your clothes, you dont have to worry about your mike...nothing! (laughs) and in that way - it's freedom! A lot of people ko,writers ko bhi... a lot of writers like creating their own world and I was fascinated by that! Lagta hai ke future mein main usko explore karungi ke mujhe apni ek duniya banani hai...apne dimaag mein!

Toh Sonam, itna main keh sakta hoon ki SLB ke saath kaam karne ke liye, jo aapne achi-kaasi degree haasil ki Singapore se...

SONAM: Degree nahin! 12th standard pass kiya. Abhi main BA kar rahi hoon (laughs)... Degree toh... Diploma kiya tha maine, haanji.

Toh aage kya?

SONAM: Main BA kar rahi hoon... Bilkul film us mein nahin... Economics ke saath.

Difficult subject hai na?

SONAM: Difficult subject? Sort of! Maine history, maths, theatre aur woh sab kiya tha 12th mein... Toh school mein itni.. matlab, I was a good student. Not a bad student at all. So basically, yea, I have to finish my studies. Correspondence se, Bombay University se, main kar rahi hoon...

Sonam, badi baat yeh hai... SLB kayi cheezo ke liye mushoor hai... Main elaborate nahin karunga... Kitni daant padi aapko sets pe?

SONAM: Daant toh padi! I mean it's like any student going to school. I mean, teacher se daant parti hai ke nahin parti? Bolte hai ke 'acha baba tumne yeh bohat khubsurati se yeh shot diya, tum itni khubsurat lag rahi ho, kya emotion diya'...Woh sab toh milta hai! Taaliya bhi milti hai set pe, but at the same time...you get fired, na? Ki 'bacha tumne yeh theek nahin kiya, tum concentrate nahin kar rahi ho'... you know, because I was 19/20 when I started shooting... Meri concentration level toh...

Galatiya ho jaati hai

SONAM: Galatiya ho jaati hai, I'm human! And unho ne kahaa ki..he shouted at me once or twice... but that's any parent shouting at their child saying that 'dekho tumne theek nahin kiya toh ekkk (slap)'... (laughs) toh rona toh aayega! Main toh har waqt pe, har 15 minute roti hoon, according to Ranbir & Sanjay Sir.

Aapko dekh kar lagta nahin hai mujhko!

SONAM: (laughs) No, I cry. I cry, I laugh. Gussa bhi aa jaata hai mujhe bohat. Dimaag thoda garam hai!

Acha hua aapne bataa diya, main sawaal sambaal kar poochunga! Acha...Sets par kabhi Anilji gaye the kya?

SONAM: Nahin. He's come, but not when I'm shooting. Ek/do baar agar woh aas-paas the toh van pe aake mere saath baite. Pehli baar jab main van mein gayi thi toh maine kahaa "PAPA! Ive got my own van! Ive got my own makeup artiste!" Tabhi thodi excitement hui thi, so he came to share that, to see what was happening! But jab woh mera koi naya shot dekhte hai, AV pe ya editing room mein, I hope ke unhe thoda sa garv hota hai. Ek baar unki aankhon se aasoon bhi likle. Toh in that way, Im very proud that SLB took me in his movie because I can't fail in his film as he's taken care of me so much. So this is where my journey has just begun! Because there's no way I can fail BECAUSE OF SLB...but after this, we'll see what happens!

Sonam, kabhi aap yeh baat ka ehsaas karti hai ke badi film aane wali hai... Aap hai, Ranbir hai... Ek badi film ko carry karna, toh kuch baad hai shoulders pe?

SONAM: Um thoda toh parta hai, pressure toh hai. Not because mujhe kisi ko prove karna hai ke main kuch kar sakti hoon...because people I love, like Mr Bhansali, Ranbir, my father, my mother... I don't want to let them down.

Anilji ki sabse fav film kaunsi thi?

SONAM: Pukaar! Unki performance jo Pukaar mein thi... I mean, it was outstanding. Aapne dekhi hai, Pukaar?

Pukaar, bilkul dekhi hai.

SONAM: Aur aapko yaad hai jab woh saare medals strip karte hai? I was howling in that...and Ishwar, Parinda, Karma, Woh 7 Din... Har ek film mein.. ek kirdaar aur doosra kirdaar, it's so different!

Ram Lakhan toh aap bhul hi gayi!

SONAM: Nahin, main kaise bhool sakti hoon? Jo bhi Subhash Ghai ki films hai & Laadla, Beta... Jo bhi hai... Har ek film itni brilliant hai ke main kaise keh sakti hoon meri kaunsi favourite hai? Saari favourite hai meri!
