A hair-raising tale

They might experiment with the cut, but when it comes to the length of those silky locks, long is how our silverscreen’s temptresses prefer it.

Be it Sonam Kapoor, Tabu, Kareena Kapoor, Tara Sharma, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Rao, Hannsikaa Motwani or even Bipasha Basu, one thing all of them have in common is long tresses. Wonder if that’s any style statement or just a personal choice!

Hansikaa Motwani has no issues managing her long tresses. “I’m very particular about the length of my hair and the look I sport is worth the effort I put in managing them. Besides, in movies we always have the choice of using a wig to sport a different look, then why chop off hair? Moreover, when you have long hair, you have the choice of sporting different kinds of looks. Like in real life, I generally go for soft perms, the straightened look, or even the razor cut for different occasions,” she says.

However, while Sonam Kapoor may boast of having the longest tresses in the industry at present, the actress herself says that she would not “mind going in for a hair cut, provided it’s for a role. After all, hair can be re-grown and actually it’s your work that is counted, at the end of the day.”

Wonder, with those hectic schedules, how do they get the time to care for their long hair? Even Ameesha Patel, who was to have a haircut for a role, hasn’t really chopped off the length of her lovely tresses. Celebrity hair stylist Najeeb-ur-Rehman shares, “Actors are basically in the glamour business and having long hair gives them more options to go in for varied looks. Also, long hair is considered an Indian trait, so that helps heroines sport the Indian look too. Also, to make long hair look different for different occasions, one can go in for streaking or colouring, and angular cuts.”

But ain’t it taxing for the make-up artists to give long-haired actors the right look? “Not at all. In fact, we get wider options to think of more styles. But that’s only when the actor has her long hair cut in layers or razor. But for hair like Sonam’s (Kapoor), who has a straight cut, giving her a different look while maintaining her long hair can be tough.”

But is chopping off hair a fine option with all actors? “It actually depends from actor to actor, but more importantly, on the role. Some may be sporting enough while others may need to be persuaded enough for that.”
